It’s actually called 'Signature Reduction' and you’re going to need to sit down for this one.

The Invisible Hand on X …

For years @DataRepublican AKA Jennica Pounds, presented herself as an independent data analyst exposing government waste and NGO networks. Just days ago that image cracked when an AP reporter confirmed she had been a Special Government Employee for the Department of War since July of 2026.

She never disclosed it. She kept posting, targeting groups and citizens, and receiving official documents while drawing a government paycheck. Only after the story broke did she admit the role.

The episode echoes a 2021 Newsweek investigation that revealed the Pentagon’s “signature reduction” program — or sig redux. It is a large-scale effort, involving tens of thousands of military personnel, civilians, and contractors, to operate under false or low-profile identities both in the physical world and online.

Sasha Latypova has this to say about Sig Redux:

"While the true scope of this agency is unknown, it was estimated to employ ~60,000 people around 2015 (the CIA at the time had ~20K employees). The activities include creating fake credentials, identifications, passports, personas, backstories, employment records, social media profiles, documentation like Fauci’s diary, sometimes even casting doppelgangers for important individuals or operations. It is highly likely that many high profile doctors, scientists and other professionals with influential podcasts/social media presence on all sides of freedom are affiliated with these narrative control activities. It is also possible that there are even greater numbers of “soft-controlled” individuals - their public speech is directed via numerous direct and indirect incentives, and “nudges” into preferred narratives of masking the military-intelligence Operation Covid as a public health event. The soft controlled assets may or may not be aware of being handled.”

The goal is to erase detectable footprints so the government can collect intelligence and run influence operations without clear attribution. The force is roughly ten times the size of the CIA’s clandestine service and has operated with little public oversight.

Viewed through that lens, the Data Republican case raises a simple question: when a high-visibility “independent” account is quietly on the government payroll, how much of the conversation is still organic? Signature reduction was built for foreign and cyber operations. The concern now is whether its methods have moved into the domestic information space.
